You’ve bantered over email, text flirted and chatted on the phone, so at last you’re taking the plunge and meeting your online date. Cue wardrobe nightmare!
This outfit can make or break an opinion, and let’s face it, you’d think twice if he turned up in deck shoes and chinos.
One stilettoed foot in the wrong style direction and you could ruin your chance of happy ever after, or at least of a second date.
So before you meet your online man face-to-face, we asked Fashion Director Romina Karamanea from Styleshake, the website that lets you design your perfect dress made to measure, to create her first-date dresses and give you some crucial style tips.
Here are her ideas for four different date scenarios.
DRINKS AT STYLISH BAR
If he’s taking you to the latest bar then chances are he appreciates fashion and won’t be scared off if you turn up this season’s latest looks. That said, Agnes Dean looks fabulous on the fashion pages but Mr Right may not understand stripy knee-highs and a trilby. “Pick feminine looks like this season’s ra-ra skirts and jewelled tops,” says Romina.
TOP NOSH AT A FANCY RESTAURANT
If he’s made the effort to book a table at a good restaurant he’ll expect you to dress to the occasion, so your little black dress is the order of the day. “Go for glamour and classic style like Audrey Hepburn, add accents of your personality with accessories but nothing too oversized or he’ll have trouble focussing on you! ” says Romina.
PIZZA THEN CINEMA
You can’t go wrong with the wardrobe staple of jeans and a top for this kind of casual date. “The right blouse this season will hit the spot”, Romina suggests. “The sheer fabric makes it still sexy and with a few buttons undone you can show a hint of cleavage. Vamp up your look by pairing it with your sexiest pair of leather boots, this is not the time for Uggs!”
COUNTRY PUB
Any man that suggests a country pub date must be a down-to-earth type – think Ben Fogyle! Appeal to his simple-but-romantic date idea by picking a floaty dress. Romina says: “There are heaps of these dresses available. Keep this look casual by picking a cotton or linen dress, if you choose a chiffon or silk it could end up looking like a wedding outfit.” And you don’t want to freaky him out on the first date!
